BAJ Freight And Logistics is a leading Ghanaian indigenous company that provides end to end freight and logistics solutions at all sea and air ports to and from around the world. Our head office is in Tema with offices at Accra International Airport and Takoradi. Baj is currently strengthening its transport operations with a focus on the strategic direction, organization and management of the transport function to ensure costs, risks and supply security are managed in line with corporate objectives.

We are now hiring for the roles of:
Transport Manager 1 – Takoradi (1)

Scope & Coverage

The Transport Manager is accountable for the safe, reliable, compliant and cost-effective management of the Company’s transport and fleet operations within its operational areas. The role provides strategic and operational leadership for the Company’s vehicles, drivers, transport personnel, third-party transport providers and associated fleet assets. The Transport Manager is responsible for optimizing fleet utilization, vehicle availability, maintenance performance, fuel efficiency, driver performance, transport costs, customer service and regulatory compliance. The role will leverage fleet-management systems, GPS/telematics, digital inspections, operational data and performance analytics to improve safety, productivity, asset reliability and decision-making. The Transport Manager will also provide leadership in journey management, driver-risk management, preventive and predictive maintenance, contractor performance, fleet lifecycle planning and continuous improvement.

The role is based in Takoradi and reports to the Chief Operations Officer

Core Tasks

Transport Operations Management

Responsible for deriving transport operations objectives from corporate strategy, steering costs, risks and supply security to implement the transport operations plan within the organization.

Fleet Management
  • Maintain strategic and operational oversight of the Company’s fleet.
  • Monitor vehicle availability, utilization, age, condition, mileage and operating performance.
  • Support development of fleet replacement plans based on vehicle age, condition, utilization,
    maintenance cost, reliability and total cost of ownership.
  • Monitor vehicle lifecycle costs and identify opportunities for cost optimization.
  • Monitor vehicle deployment to ensure appropriate vehicle selection for each operational
    requirement.
Vehicle Maintenance & Asset Reliability
  • Develop and implement an effective preventive maintenance programme in conjunction with the
    Service Engineer/Maintenance function.
  • Ensure scheduled maintenance is completed within approved intervals.
  • Collaborate with Engineering/Maintenance on technical problems and recurring fleet failures
Driver Management & Performance
  • Provide leadership and direction to drivers, mates and transport personnel.
  • Participate in recruitment and selection of competent drivers and transport personnel.
  • Establish appropriate driver induction, orientation and competency requirements.
Journey Management & Road Safety
  • Establish and maintain effective journey-management processes.
  • Identify and assess transport and journey-related risks.
  • Ensure high-risk journeys receive appropriate planning and authorization.
Fuel Management & Costs Control
  • Develop and maintain effective fleet fuel-management controls.
  • Monitor fuel consumption by vehicle, driver, route and operational activity.
  • Analyze fuel efficiency and investigate abnormal consumption.
Customer & Service Delivery
  • Maintain strong professional relationships with customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Act as a senior point of contact for significant transport-related issues.
  • Investigate and resolve customer complaints relating to transport services.
Technology Data & Digital Fleet Management

The Transport Manager is expected to champion the effective use of technology in transport operations.

  • Implement and optimize GPS and fleet-tracking systems.
  • Use telematics data to improve safety, productivity and fleet utilization.
  • Promote digital vehicle inspection and defect-reporting systems.
  • Use fleet-management software to manage vehicle, driver, maintenance and compliance data.
QHSE Leadership

The Transport Manager is accountable for ensuring that transport activities are conducted in accordance with the Company’s Quality, Health, Safety, Security and Environmental requirements.

Qualifications & Experience & Skills
  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Transport Management, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Operations Management, Business Administration, Mechanical Engineering or another relevant discipline.
  • Relevant professional qualification or certification in transport, logistics, fleet management, supply chain or operations is an advantage.
  • Valid driver’s licence appropriate to the Company’s vehicle categories.
  • Minimum 5 years’ relevant experience in transport, fleet, logistics, haulage or related operations and at least 2–3 years in a supervisory or management position.
  • Excellent people skills, emotional intelligence, strong IT skills, strong research skills, excellent presentation skills
  • Experience in any of the following environments eg Freight forwarding, Port/terminal operations, Haulage, Heavy lifting, Oil & gas, Mining, Construction, Industrial logistics, marine/logistics support and large-scale commercial fleet operations

Education and Professional Qualifications

  • HND or Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Transport Management, Supply Chain Management,
    Business Administration, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Professional certification or training in transport, logistics, fleet management, defensive driving
    or occupational safety.
  • First Aid/Basic Life Support certification is an advantage.
  • Minimum of 2–3 years’ relevant experience in transport, fleet, logistics or a similar operational
    role.
  • Experience coordinating drivers and fleet activities.
  • Practical knowledge of light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles.
  • Experience with vehicle inspections, maintenance coordination and fleet documentation
  • Competence in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Ability to prepare fleet reports, dashboards and operational summaries.
  • Ability to use GPS, telematics and/or fleet-management systems.
  • Excellent people skills and emotional intelligence
